We are now a year into a global pandemic but with the vaccinations, hopefully the end is in sight! As we have shifted, flexed and changed direction in this difficult time, one thing is for certain...children still love to read and they still need their libraries open. At Ray Shepherd we have done everything possible to make books available to the students. It began with weekly bins to the classrooms, then students were allowed to choose one book of their own. All books needed to be washed or quarantined for a time but we made it work. Luckily there is new research showing that the virus does not spread on paper products. No more washing books! Today students are allowed to select a few books to read and as long as they sanitize hands before and after touching the books. It has been a difficult year but we are making it and like Mason Cooley said, "Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are".
*Stay safe and stay healthy everyone*

Click on the tab called Weekly Storytime and find the story called Nesting. Click on that tab and you can watch a short video of Ms. Baker's baby chickadee! I will post more pictures or videos if more babies hatch.
After 6 years of this website looking the same, I decided it was time for a change. The content remains but the look is a little different. I have changed the photos and updated some of the information. I hope you enjoy it!
If you are out for a walk and want to take a stroll through Bell Park, next to Ray Shepherd Elementary, I have a challenge for you!
In the reading I did of the book See a Heart Share a Heart I showed you a rock I painted with a heart and the word TOGETHER. I have placed this rock in Bell Park somewhere along the circle path. If you are out walking, see if you can find the rock. Please don't take it but stop and have a look and remember that I am missing you and we are all in this together. If you would like to add your own decorated rock to the path somewhere it could be a lot of fun and bring happiness to people when they see the beautiful rocks. Here is a clue of where my rock placed. Happy searching! Recently I have created a few new tabs for you to explore.
-Weekly Storytime will have activities, photos and links to go with the weekly stories I have read. I cannot attach the link to the reading due to copyright laws, however, your teacher should be sending you the link each week. -Online Resources has information and screencasts of various resources that I have recommended in Mrs. Chau's Friday Flashes. I will be regularly adding to both of these tabs so check back often! During this crazy time when we must stay inside and do our part to keep the world healthy, there is no better time to enjoy the love of reading! Reading can takes us beyond the 4 walls of our home and give us the adventures we are so longing for. I have created a new tab to help you access and link to online reading resources. I will regularly be posting new links, videos and information on how to use the resources. I wish you all well and stay safe and healthy!
Welcome back to a new year at Ray Shepherd Elementary. We are looking forward to getting our Library and Tech Monitors in place in the coming weeks and starting book circulation as soon as possible. This year we look forward to continuing our Grade 2/3 Girls and Grown-up Book Club, our Chess Club, Scholastic Book Fairs and hopefully getting our Maker Space up and running. Stay tuned for updates on all the fun we are having!
Thank you to all the students and parents who came out and enjoyed our Bookaneer Pirate themed Scholastic Book Fair. Many students took home new books and others requested books they would like to see in our Library Learning Commons. Overall it was a huge success and a lot of excitement was generated towards literacy!
Our new mural is complete! Last spring we decided that to finish off our Library Learning Commons renovation we needed a mural. We wanted something inspirational and motivational that incorporates our school focus of Aboriginal Education. We think artist Jason Craft created exactly that!
Welcome to another fun filled and exciting year in the Ray Shepherd Learning Commons. Students are regularly signing in and out books and they are loving all the new books that have been purchased thanks to the generous donation from the PAC committee. We have already begun our Surrey School Book of the Year program and students in grades 4 and 5 have signed up to be part of this year's Reading Link Challenge. See the links under the Student tab for more information about these programs. The Library Monitors are all trained and working hard and so are the classroom Tech Monitors. Without their help and support, the learning commons and our technology would not run as smoothly. A big thank you to all students who applied. We have recently begun our "Tech Club" which runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays for students in grades 4-7. Don't worry if you are in the younger grades, you will have a turn too! This term the Tech Club is focusing on learning about 3D creation and printing their unique creations. A few exciting things to keep your eyes opened for include: -October 24th - DEAR day (Drop Everything and Read) -Our new Learning Commons painted mural -Grade 2/3 girl's parent and child book club in the month of November -Book Fair at the end of November -Chess Club begins in December -Hour of Code focus the first week of December So much is happening and you are always welcome to pop in for a visit! |
